LAMERG: Companies Active in Supporting Employees and Communities as Venezuela Crisis Continues

Published on:

Topics:

With Venezuela undergoing ongoing political turmoil and hyperinflation of between 800,000% and 1,000,000%, Littler Mendelson Shareholder Juan Carlos Varela offers practical suggestions for companies with employees in the region based in large part on what many employers are already doing.
  • For companies who have a handful of employees, there are opportunities to ensure that there is robust security for employees and offices, as well as providing salary payments in dollars to U.S. accounts.  This process is a legal and well-established approach so long as the payments do not originate from a Venezuelan source.

  • Some companies have shipped household generators to employees because of the pervasive power outages, and also given employees access to water supplies at the office since the public water system is not reliable.  High quality personal water filters which can remove biological as well as mineral contaminants are also welcome.

  • Some companies with only small numbers of accounting and related staff have also partnered with their audit and accounting firms to transfer those employees to the accounting companies.  They often have sufficient mass and infrastructure to ensure a better overall result.

  • Businesses with larger operations have additional possibilities, including in-kind payments depending on the business model, and helping workers open foreign accounts for payments.  Some employers have also created a high-frequency (as often as daily) money transfer process to send small amounts of dollars using the Italcambio system.

  • There is also a robust network of overnight shipping companies, especially in Miami, who specialize in delivering needed goods and supplies to Venezuela.  Generically known as “Puerta a Puerta” shippers, these companies can be found with web searches.
