BEERG: EU Union Pushes for Expansive New Legislative Agenda

November 10, 2017

The European Trade Union Confederation is proposing legislation intended to bring "fair and higher wages, strong social dialogue and collective bargaining, improved employment and labor rights and sound social protection systems" in advance of an EU "Social Summit" in Sweden later this month at which the European Pillar of Social Rights is to be adopted.  According to the most recent BEERG Global Labor Newsletter, ETUC has identified 10 "building blocks" which it says will enable the Pillar to deliver on its promises.  Core "building blocks" include:

  • Rights to become enforceable for all workers in all workplaces through a comprehensive legislative program and in particular, the introduction of a suite of Employment Directives;

  • Strengthening sectoral collective bargaining and trade union rights, closing the wage gaps and improving working conditions; and

  • Securing investment to make the rights real: mobilizing existing EU funds and future EU budgets to help fund implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights and ensuring that the implementation of the Pillar is not held hostage of restrictive budgetary constraints.
