Social Media Companies Must Follow Indian Law

March 11, 2021

Social Media companies will need to follow India's laws or face strict enforcement action, the minister for electronics and information technology said in Parliament on February 14th. He added that the government was working on new rules to make social media companies more responsive to directions and accountable to Indian laws. He said that, while the government was in favor of freedom of speech and expression, fake news, misinformation, election manipulation, and other abuses of social media platforms will not be tolerated. Officials have said that the government is in the process of amending rules under the IT Act 2000, so that social media companies take “more responsibility.”
