U.S. Trade Rep Nominee Vows to Use RRLM to its “Fullest Potential”

President Trump’s nominee for United States Trade Representative, attorney Jamieson Greer, highlighted the Rapid Response Labor Mechanism (RRLM) chapter of the USMCA as the world's most ambitious during his Senate confirmation hearing. However, Trump's first administration filed far fewer cases than Biden's administration.

What the experts are saying:

  • The trend of rising RRLM complaints is anticipated to continue under the current Trump administration, given the role of Trump's team in its design, according to Humberto Ruiz Correa, lawyer at Baker McKenzie.

  • RRLM's success in improving Mexican labor conditions, like “good salaries and guaranteed freedom of association discourages illegal migration,” commented ILAW Network lawyer Pablo Franco.

The USMCA is scheduled for renegotiated in 2026. However, it's unclear whether labor will top the agenda, as taxes and other major economic issues demand immediate attention.
