Ireland: Employment law review group established

Ireland’s Dept of Employment has established an Employment Law Review Group to assess and advise on employment and redundancy law, aiming to simplify and update legislation

Key Points to Know: Ireland has established an Employment Law Review Group (ELRG). The ELRG will review and advise on all aspects of employment and redundancy law. Its focus is on simplifying laws and ensuring they remain relevant.

Why This Matters: This initiative could provide a basis for some changes in Irish employment law, potentially simplifying compliance for employers while updating protections for employees. The ELRG’s work will be expert, technical, and legal in nature

What Happens Next: We in HR Policy Global Europe will make a submission on the faults with the current Irish EWC legislation and what needs to be done to fix it. We will also make a submission on the transposition of the revised EWC Directive at the appropriate time. Member companies should consider preparing submissions on areas of concern, particularly regarding EWC legislation.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Quotes from the Department statement announcing the group’s establishment:

a specific focus on promoting good workplace relations in the State, simplifying the operation of employment and redundancy law in the State, and ensuring that the State’s suite of employment rights and redundancy legislation remains relevant and fit for purpose and is updated to reflect international developments.”

“will be more expert, technical, and legal rather than representative of stakeholders’ interests. Members will engage with the work programme of the ELRG and contribute to ELRG reports.”
