EU: Who knows about the Batteries Regulation?

We want to put the EU’s Batteries Regulation 2023/1542 on your radar. It introduces due diligence requirements covering the entire lifecycle of batteries, affecting labour and employee relations.

Why it matters: It is yet “another brick in the wall” in a suite of EU laws that introduce due diligence requirements that force companies to disclose supply chain information, impacting HR policies.

Details: Auret van Heerden from Equiception highlights that:

  • The regulation applies to all economic operators placing batteries on the EU market.
  • It covers the entire lifecycle and all battery types.
  • From Aug 2025, operators must have an independent due diligence policy regarding social and environmental risks.
  • Policies must align with UN, ILO, and OECD standards and be externally assured.
  • Annual reports must be published detailing due diligence activities and third-party verification summaries.

What’s next: Companies should start preparing for these regulations to ensure compliance and transparency.
