EU: Parliament committee gives Platform Workers Directive green light

A new deal on Platform Workers in the EU has been approved by the Employment Committee of the European Parliament.

Why it matters: This looks like becoming national law around Q3 of 2026. Platform Workers and EU legislators need clarity on labor classification, impacting future legal rights and protections.

The big picture: The new EU deal sets a precedent for future regulations on labor classification and AI utilization in workplaces.

The bottom line: It will be up to individual Member States, in accordance with their own national laws, practices, and collective bargaining agreements, to design mechanisms to determine whether platform workers are employees or genuine self-employed. The Directive requires that national laws lean towards a presumption of employment unless the platform operators can prove otherwise.
