From Milan, Mario holds an MA in Economics from the Université Catholique de Louvain and a PhD in Public Finance from the London School of Economics. He joined the European Commission in 1994 and has held various senior positions across the institution, including: Director for “horizontal policies” in the DG for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union, and Director of the Regulation and prudential supervision of financial institutions. Mario was a member of the Group of Policy Advisers of EU Commission President, Prof. Romano Prodi, and a member of the Cabinet of the Competition Commissioner, Prof. Mario Monti.

Alongside his current work, Mario is active in research and teaching. He is currently Visiting Professor at Bocconi University (Milan) and at Solvay Business School (Brussels) and has been teaching in several universities in Europe and Latin America.
