Steven Gilbert
Executive Director, Latin America Employee Relations Group

Steve is the founder of Bluefin Human Resources Consulting, and serves as Senior Advisor on Global Human Resources for the Association. He provides training and support for domestic and global employee relations and human resources issues, as well as behaviorally-based coaching and leadership development programs for managers and executives. He has a broad range of experience in international labor and human rights standards, and is on the HRPA staff for the Global Labor Relations Certification Program. He is also responsible for the Association’s activities involving Latin American HR challenges.

His career includes executive roles with Maersk, the Danish conglomerate with interests in shipping, ocean terminals, logistics, and oil and gas exploration and production. He served as the initial Chair of their Global Labour Relations Council in addition to roles with Maersk Line as HR head for North America and, later, Latin America, during which he was based in Panama. In his role as head of Maersk’s Global Labour Council, Steve led the implementation of the Group’s commitment to the UN Global Compact and also served as the liaison between the Human Resources organization and the Group Sustainability structure regarding human rights issues such as the Ruggie Principles. Steve left the Group to launch a start-up joint venture based in London and Singapore in which Maersk was a major shareholder; the business was closed following regulatory opposition from China.

Previously, he was SCA’s first head of Management and Organization Development, and was based in Stockholm following several years as their VP of Human Resources for North America. Other roles include VP of HR for the Americas with the German-based industrial gas producer Messer Griesheim, Director, Human Resources for Schering Plough HealthCare Products (now part of Merck), and Director, Employee Relations and EEO for NL Industries. He has developed employee relations strategies and tactics in a wide variety of complex and demanding environments, and created integrated approaches to workplace transformation through clear deliverables, transparent communications, and well-coordinated implementation. He has personally led more than 100 labor contract negotiations including multi-employer pattern bargaining, decision and effects bargaining, and a ground-breaking agreement at a nuclear weapons facility which created, with the support of the US Department of Energy, a new approach to worker safety and the environment.

Steve has a B.S. in Economics from the University of California, Riverside, and has been active with a number of community programs and educational activities. He served as the Chair of the Stockholm International School Board.
